FAQ

You have questions – we have answers

Navigating the world of dog training can feel overwhelming, especially since it's an unregulated industry with a wide variety of approaches and philosophies out there. That's why we've created this FAQ page to provide clear, concise answers to commonly asked questions about our services, our methods, and what you can expect when working with us.

What qualifications do you have?

We are proud to have a unique and extensive list of qualifications that you can review on the About page and in the Our Credentials and memberships at the bottom of each page.

What type of training methods are used?

Pooch Partners uses only positive, fear and force-free training based on modern, scientifically supported, reward-based methods.

For training to be successful, you need to be consistent. Using harsh methods or tools while working with us will confuse your dog and make it harder for them to learn and for you meet your training goals.

When you commit to training with us, you are also committing to use only positive reinforcement methods and avoid harsh tools, techniques, and other trainers during the period of receiving Pooch Partners services. Please note that use of harsh tools, methods or trainers may end our services without refund as it will compromise our ability to help you achieve your training goals.

Not sure if a tool or method is okay? Just ask us! We're happy to help.

What modes of training are available?

We offer three convenient training formats so you can choose what works best for you:

In-person: Hands-on training at your location or ours

Virtual: Live Zoom sessions from the comfort of home

Self-study: Learn at your own pace with recorded courses and resources—ideal for independent learners who want the flexibility to train on their own schedule

Consistency is key to your dog's success. If weather, illness, or other circumstances make in-person training unsafe, we'll seamlessly transition your session online. This keeps your training momentum going, protects everyone's health and safety, and ensures we can continue serving all our clients reliably.

Many programs use a hybrid approach, combining virtual and in-person sessions. This allows us to introduce foundation games online that prepare your dog for even more productive in-person work.

What is virtual training and does it really work?

Virtual training means we connect via Zoom for our sessions—and yes, it works incredibly well - just as good as or better than in-person sessions! Beyond saving you time, gas, and the stress of commuting, virtual training offers some powerful advantages.

Training at home means everyone can join in. When all household members participate, you create the consistency your dog needs to succeed.

Fewer distractions mean faster learning. Without strangers, other dogs, or unfamiliar environments to worry about, your dog stays focused and less stressed. Starting in a comfortable, low-distraction space sets your dog up for success from day one.

Learn from anywhere, anytime. Virtual sessions give you access to expert training no matter where you are in the world. Plus, every session is recorded—you'll never miss a thing and can review the training for up to 6 months after your package ends.

What is games-based concept training?

Games based concept training involves playing games with your dog that teaches them different concepts. For example, to teach a recall we would play games that build up our dogs ability to disengage from what they are doing (disengagement), turn towards us (orientation), and then come in close proximity (proximity) to us.  As we play the games, our dog learns these concepts and patterned behaviours and we are then able to put it all together with a recall cue. Playing the games increases the “feel good” hormones which leads to increased motivation and engagement to play the games.

What if my partner/spouse doesn’t use the same training method?

Inconsistency in training methods will definitely impact your dog’s success. It is crucial to have all people in the household on the same page to give your dog the best learning experience. As many people are not familiar with games based training, in my experience skepticism is replaced with confidence and participation in the training when your spouse/partner sees the changes in your dog‘s behaviour after playing the games.

What's the difference between group and private packages?

Group classes meet at the same day and time each week for consecutive weeks. If you miss a session, makeup classes aren't available. These classes follow a set curriculum that covers general training topics, which may not address your dog's specific behavioral challenges and the trainer's attention is shared among all participants. For these reasons, group packages are more budget-friendly than private training.

Private training offers flexible scheduling across different days and times over consecutive weeks to fit your busy life. Each program is fully customized to tackle your dog's specific needs, and you receive the trainer's complete, undivided attention for all your questions.Private training is ideal if you have specific behavioural issues to address, need a flexible schedule, or want personalized one-on-one coaching tailored exclusively to you and your dog.

What happens at a typical group session?

A typical session involves 5-10 minutes to review the prior session and get updates on each student’s progress, 10-15 minutes to introduce/demo new content, 20-25 minutes of practical exercises, and 5-10 minutes for questions/review homework.

What happens at a typical private session?

A typical private session is similar to the group session, except that it is customizable.  This means that there is opportunity to address any issues that may arise beyond the typical group session content, and if you prefer, to spend time working on a specific skill or issue.

What happens when I register for a training package?

When you register for a training package you will be asked to review and accept our service agreement, complete a form to tell us more about your dog, and if purchasing private training, schedule your sessions. Depending on the package, you may also receive automated reminders by emails or text messaging. If you have any questions or encounter any problems during the process, just contact us at [email protected].

What do I need to bring to a training session?

You will be advised what to bring to each session, but typically for the first session you will need your dog on a flat collar/martingale/Y-harness and leash (no retractables), a long line, your dog’s bed or a blanket/large towel, your dog’s daily food allowance (typically a mix of regular food with whatever treats you may use), poop bags, and water – dependent on the time of year.

Are payment plans available?

Full payment is required at the time of registration. This helps us confirm your commitment and reserve your spot in our calendar. But don't worry as both PayPal and Stripe (our payment processors) offer payment plan options.

Are refunds available if I change my mind or don’t want to continue training?

We do not give refunds for any reason. Training works when both sides are committed. We promise to help you get the best results. We need you to promise the same—to finish your training package as planned.

We know this is a big decision. Please think carefully about whether you're ready before you sign up. Do you have the time? Are you ready to commit?

Have questions? Not sure if our program is right for you? Book a Discovery call before you register. We're happy to talk about your situation and get your started in the right program!

What if I have to miss a scheduled session?

We understand that life happens! Here's what to do:

Group Classes: If you have to miss a group class, you can watch the video recording (if we have one available). This helps you catch up. We cannot offer make-up classes for groups.

Private Training: Please tell us at least 24 hours before if you need to cancel. This helps us adjust our schedule. You can reschedule within one week after your package ends. Sessions missed without 24-hours notice cannot be rescheduled or refunded. Sessions not rescheduled in time will be lost.

We want you to succeed! Please treat your training sessions as very important appointments for your dog.

What guarantee do you offer?

Professional associations prohibit the unethical practice of guaranteeing specific training results. The success of the training is highly dependent on your commitment, participation, and daily practice. We do guarantee top-notch support to set you and your dog up to achieve that success.
